The New Tree

On Thursday we planted a tree with Mr. Farquhar. He loves nature. The tree is a Japanese Maple. We put it where no one will step on it so it can grow. We put it there because it can blend in with the trees. It is purple right now. We got some pictures of it. We got some of us and Mr. Farquhar and the tree. We all got to help plant the tree. The tree is very delicate so we had to be very careful with it. Mr. Farquhar loves the outdoor center. After we were done planting the tree we got a special treat. Planting the tree was alot of fun!

Mr. Faquhar comes to our class to plant a tree

On Friday Mr.Farquhar came to our class to plant a tree because when he retired he said that he wanted to plant a tree because he loves the outdoor centre and he loves trees. Three people went out to dig the hole and two photographers went out. When they were done digging the hole, the rest of the class went out to see Mr.Farquhar plant the tree. When we went out I had to get one of the cameras because I was one of the photographers. We took lots of pictures. Mr.Farquhar put compost in with the tree. The tree was called a Japanese maple tree. When we went back inside we got timbits. They were very good!

Gym Class

In gym class we played king's court dodgeball and doctor dodgeball and volley ball.
I used to hold my hand wrong but Naomi showed me how to hold it.We use dodge balls. We also played castle dodgeball. It is like kings court but we need 6/six mats off the wall. For doctor dodgeball we use the same things but the mats off the wall. We need a doctor for the game. The doctor saves the person that is sitting down. The person sitting down is sick. The doctor touches the person that is sick. The unsick people help protect the doctor because if the doctor gets hit he or she can not be saved till all the people get hit. Then the other team is the winner.

Mr. Farquhar's Tree

Friday November ,5 2010 The New Tree

We planted a tree yesterday with Mr. Farquhar. It is a Japanese Maple. It was very rainy outside. We had do put some compost in the hole for the tree. We had to make sure there was enough soil in the hole for the plant to come up to the edge of the top of the hole. There were lots of worms in the soil that will help the plant grow. The reason Mr. Farquhar wanted to plant a tree when he retired was because he loved the nature and he loved trees. We planted it over by the outdoor center because no one can step on it there and it was also because he loves it there. When we were done we got a special treat.

It was very cold and it was raining a little bit. I was one of the photographer's out of three. We all got lots of pictures. Hannah, Ava went out first with Rhinna, Keaton and Willam.S went out with Mr.Farquhar to dig the tree hole once they where done diging the hole the rest of the class went out to watch Mr.Farquhar plant the tree but the digers had to fill in some of the dirt to make the tree be leveled with the ground. Then he put compost in with the tree. After the tree was planted we went back inside and had some timbits. They were great!

Planting A Tree

On Thursday November the 4th Mr.Farquhar came to our school to plant a tree. He wanted to plant a tree because he loves nature and when he retired he wanted a tree planted. He choose Mrs.Dressel's class because last year he taught most of the students in her class. So first he got three people from Mrs.Dressel's class to dig a hole after we spotted some where to plant the tree. Then Mr.Farquhar choose two people from the year book in Mrs.Dressel's class to take photographs. Then the five people went outside and dug the hole. When they were done they invited the rest of the class to come outside and plant the tree with them. Mr. Farquhar put some compost in the hole and in the compost there was fruit, tea bags, orange peels, seeds and a lot of other things. While Mr.Farquhar was planting the tree the the rest of the class was watching him. When the tree was planted someone asked what the tree's name was so Mr.Farquhar told us to close our eyes and think of a name. Then when we thought of a name we opened our eyes and he said if you named it Japanese Maple you are exactly right. So everybody named their tree Japanese Maple but they added another name after Japanese Maple. After we planted the tree we came inside and had some timbits!!! It was super fun!!

Sand erosion

Tuesday October 19 2010, Mrs Dressel's grade4 class went out to do a sand erosion experiment.

We went in groups of 3, 4 and 5. We made a mountain out of sand then we got a straw and blew through it to see what would happen if we did. Then we got a cup and poked a hole in it and put water in the cup to see what would happen if we put water on our moutain.

French

This week in French class we learned a song thats like the twelve days of Christmas. We learned the numbers 1-20 and I think French is fun. We also learned how to say "can I go to the bathroom" and "can I get a drink of water". We know a lot of French. Our French teacher's nane is Madame. On Fridays we sometimes play games and we get candy if we win or if we are good. We also know all of the feelings like happy, sad or ok. We are starting to do dictation for French words.

Emerging Monarch!

Excitement in the pod today when Sarah's chrysalis turned black and the Monarch began to emerge. It started just before lunch and, in a matter of minutes, there was a beautiful Monarch where the chrysalis had been! What a fabulous learning moment!

French Class

In French class this week we are learning about things in our class room. Some of them are like pencil, eraser, pen, chair, desk and teachers desk. Last week we learned about things in the school. My favourite word out of the things you find in the school would be la bibliotheque.

Racquetball

And this is how you play it. You served the ball to the wall and made sure it never stopped bouncing. You hit it with a tennis racquet but the tennis racquet is very short. It was very fun. You have to have a bouncy ball and you go in this small type of gym to play. If the ball stops, you have to serve it again and if it bounces very low, you can still hit the racquetball. You need goggles on your eyes but not actually touching your eyes. You do not want the ball stuck on the roof and make sure you do not get hurt. It is way, way too fun!

Martial Arts

When we went to Queen's, we went to martial arts. We played a game called Pip, Squeak and Wilbur. If she called Pip, you would run once around the room. Then you would have to run in between your partners' legs. If she called Squeak or Wilbur they would have to do the same thing. Then they had to grab a ribbon and get back to their spot. Then every time someone would take a ribbon away. One team would not get a ribbon. They would be out. Tamara and I both were Squeak.

Martial Arts

Yesterday our class went to Queen's University for sports camp. At Queen's we did martial arts. Before we actually did martial arts, we played Pip, Squeak and Wilbur for a warm up. To play Pip, Squeak and Wilbur, three people are in a group and one person calls either Pip, Squeak or Wilbur. If the person calls Pip, then Pip gets up and runs around the circle once, back to Squeak and Wilbur. Squeak and Wilbur stand up with their legs spread apart and Pip runs through Squeak's and Wilbur's legs and runs to the middle of the circle and grabs an object from the circle and runs back to Squeak and Wilbur. Pip is in the front, Squeak is in the middle and Wilbur is in the back.
Then, for real martial arts, our coach, Jordan, showed us some kicks and punches. Jordan showed us some basic punches first. For example, she showed us the front, side and uppercut punches. For each punch you either punch out, to the side or up. Then we learned kicks. We said "kia" every time we kicked. She showed us the 1,2,3,4 kick. For the one, two, three, four kick you bring your foot up half way then you bring your foot up the rest of the way. After you bring your foot back down, halfway again. Then you bring it the rest of the way down.

On Tuesday we went to Queen's and did fencing. We had to put on some gear so we didn't get hurt and a helmet. After we had to pick a partner so I picked Hayden. Then we started. Hayden got me one time and I got him one time. Then we did some more. Before we started, we learned how to salute and en garde to get ready. Allez is to start and lunge is to attack.

By Clarence and Hayden

Fencing

We went to Queen's. We played a lot of sports including fencing. For fencing you need a half shirt, a jacket and a mask and you will need a glove. Once you get a glove, you will need a sword called an epee. The object of the game is to land a touch on your opponent and defend and block your opponent's attack. When your opponent comes forward, you go back and when you go back, your opponent goes forward. When you start a match, you salute your partner.

By Cole

Racquetball

At Queen's we played racquetball. We got to use a racquet that was similar to a tennis racquet but smaller. The green ball was way bouncier than the squash ball. We had to wear goggles for safety reasons. Riley whacked it high and it never came down! Then we had to use a squash ball that you had to move a lot to get. We finally got a green ball and it was harder than the black ball because it bounced a lot. Then we realized that we were stuck in the room!

Raquetball

It is played with 2 or 4 players on a court. 2 players will serve in a square box. The server with the ball will hit the ball in between two lines on the wall. The 1 line is the top line and the 2nd line is at the bottom.
Equipment and rules of the games:
2 or 4 players with 1 raquet each. 1 of the servers will serve the ball on the walls of the raquetball court. If the ball bounces 2 times, the player will get out.

By Wyatt

Wallyball

On Tuesday our class went to Queen's and did wallyball. Wallyball is the same as volleyball but the ball can bounce off the wall and over the net then hit the ground and you will still get a point. We used a white ball and held it on our palm then smacked it. It flew over the net. If you touched the net, your team lost a point.

by Hayden and Clarence

Swimming

On Tuesday June the 8th we went to Queen's for a sports day. We sent swimming just before the lunch break. When we went swimming there were three different heights of diving boards. One was really high and I went off it. There was a deep end and a shallow pool. The deep end was 12 feet deep and the shallow end was just above my waist.

Lacrosse

On Tuesday June 8th 2010, we went to Queen's Sports Camp and we learned how to play lacrosse. The first thing we learned to do was to trap, brush back and scoop. Then we learned to bounce to your partner to let them try to catch the ball. Then we learned how to throw the ball and catch the ball. After learning all of that, we started playing a game of lacrosse. We used red and blue lacrosse sticks to tell the teams apart. We had to hit the back board of the basketball net to get a score. We used the skills we learned for the game.

Learning to Play Lacrosse

At Queen's we got to lay lacrosse. We had to use a stick that was like a hockey stick but with a net at the end and a ball and goggles. Then we got a partner and we had to practice rolling the ball. Then we had to practice bouncing the ball and believe me, it is not easy to roll it and bounce the ball!! Then we moved onto throwing the ball and I learned that you need to step into your throw and step back for a catch. After we were done throwing we got to play a game. It was blue vs. red and the point of the game was to hit the backboard of a basketball net. It sounds easy but it is not! You can only take 5 steps then you would have to pass.

By Karsten and Tyler

Lacrosse

Yesterday our grade 4/5 class played lacrosse at Queen's Sports Camp. To play this sport you will need goggles, a stick, helmet, neck guard, shoulder pads, shoes, elbow pads, thick, heavy pants and shin pads, also a lacrosse ball. I think that's all you need to play lacrosse. Then we played a game of lacrosse. It was very fun but it was very hard to shoot the ball and pass the ball because it always fell out of the pocket on the end of the stick. Also we used the basketball nets for the nets. It was a lot of fun playing lacrosse at Queen's Sports Camp.

Fencing

And this is how you play. You have to put on a half shirt and the sleeve goes on the arm that the hand that you write with is. The half shirt goes under a jacket. Then you would have a fencing mask. You have a sword with a little tip at the end of the sword. You would have a red handle on your sword if you write with your right hand and if you write with your left hand you would have a blue handle. Then you're ready to fight. If your sword hits the other person you win too.

By Joey

On Tuesday June 8th, 2010, the grade 3, 4 and some of the grade 5's went to Queen's to do sports. The road Queen's is on is Earl Street. We did lacrosse, fencing, swimming, wallyball, martial arts and raquetball. My favourite was swimming. It was fun. I forgot my goggles but I know how to swim without any goggles and still had fun. Lots of people had fun fencing. They learned how to do a lunge but I already knew how to do it. I still had fun.

Queen's Sports Camp

On Tuesday June 8th, we left at 8:30 in the morning. We had to go on Earl Street to Queen's Sports Camp to go have fun there on the trip. We got there at 9:00 a.m. We got off the bus. We went to the team room to the lockers to put our stuff there. We went to lacrosse to have a fun time.

Sledge Hockey

In the grade 4/5 class we've been playing sledge hockey. First in sledge hockey you need to know the rules. No slashing and you have to stay on your sled. You can only have 3 rolls when you have the ball in your scoop. There are two nets and two goalies.
